I wrote before about my problems with opening .JFIF files with XnView, my picture viewer of choice. It still has it's fits when it comes to opening .jfif and .jpeg files.

Normally I just rename the .jfif extension to .jpg since it is a .jpg file. I was searching for a solution to a commentators problem with ending up with black pictures while converting form HEIC to JPG. Read here:

Haven't found are solution yet but did come across a solution to my problem even though I wasn't looking for one. Apparently, this .jfif extension came about because of a Microsoft update. Who would have guessed, a Microsoft update screwing up the system. :-)
If I saved a picture on Twitter for example, it usually always defaulted to the .jfif extension. So I had to remember to change it while downloading or change it after the download, both ways where a nuisance. But I found a registry tweak that fixes this problem.
Standard warnings, be careful editing the registry. One wrong snip ... I'll let your imagination fill in the rest. :-)
In the search bar type regedit
In the editor, in the top bar copy and paste (or type) the following and hit enter:
Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/jpeg
Or navigate there: Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > MIME > Database > Content Type > image/jpeg
Double click on the word Extension in the right-hand pane. Where it says .jfif, erase that and type in .jpg
Click on OK and close the editor. It should take effect right away, no restart required. If you don't want to edit the registry this way then you can download a ready made registry file here:
Just right-click on this link nspeaks.com/download/jpgNOTjfif.reg
Then Save as... and Double-click on the downloaded file. Accept all prompts.
